今週、ＳｅｎｉｏｒＮｅｔ事務局長のアンは陪審員に指名され、法廷に出掛けていて不在です。シニアネット従業員ハンドブックによると、従業員は指名されたら積極的に陪審員としての仕事をこなすとされています。アンが陪審員を努めている法廷は金曜日まで続きます。
米国では陪審員として役割を果たすことは、市民の責任のひとつです。投票すること、国家を守るために役割を果たすことと同じように。
陪審員の指名は登録有権者と運転免許の所有者の中からランダムに行われるそうです。１２年前、わたしも陪審員に指名されたことがあります。そのときは仕事の関係で辞退しました。
アンは来週から１週間の休暇に入ります。そのため私のcubicle（仕事場）のすぐ前にある彼女のオフィスは明かりが消え、静かです。（19990818）

In the U.S.A., as you have already known, to serve as a juror is one of the responsibilities of citizenship,
just as it is to vote or to serve in the defense of the country.
It is said juror's name are selected at random from lists of registered
voters and persons who have drivers licences , and so on.
I happened to be selected as a juror twelve years ago, but did not make it
due to the termination of my assignment.
Ann plans to take one week vacation next week, so her office , just in front of my cubicle,
