Response about Minnesota weather: Bernie Brown

Dear Yoko and all Japanese penpals,
This is so nice to be able to visit via the internet. It makes the world seem so much smaller.
As for Minnesota weather in the summer, the humidity is very high and our temperatures are from 80+ to 90+ and many times in the summer they in the 90s. We consider it a cool summer if the temperature is in the 70s and low 80s. We also get very bad storms when the temperature gets very high and the humidity is high. We have humidty from 60 - 90 percent in the summer.
Our storms are called tornados and they can cause a great amount of damage. Two nights ago there were several tornados in our state and one of them hit a small town with about 3500 people and destroyed over 100 homes, some totally to the ground. It knocked over large trucks, uprooted large trees and sent debris flying as far away as one to two miles. One lady had a safe that she kept her valuables in, and hurled it on the roof of someone else's house.
One person died. When the weather gets very bad, the weather bureau and the TV and radio stations warn the people and tell them there is a possible tornado or ! severe winds coming to their area. When this happens, the people go into their basements or if they are in a tall building they go to a low level inside room away from windows and outside doors.
We also get hail, which is chunks of ice that usually looks like a marble or sometimes the hail can be as big as baseballs or softballs. During these storms there is a great deal of rain in some areas that cause flooding and damage in other areas as well.
I would like to have the temperature in the 70s all the time. But most Minnesota people like the warm weather so they can swim and play outdoors and have big gardens. The warmer weather is much better for our gardens, both vegetable and flowers. I really enjoy all the fresh vegetables and fruits grown here in the summer and eat more of them during the summer. During the winter months we get fresh vegetables and fruits from either Florida, Texas, California or even South America. But then, we get produce from all over the world year around. It is nice to be able to go out to one's own garden and pick their dinner.
Until next time, hope all of you stay healthy and happy.
